Therapy can be useful when you feel life is pulling you in different directions
When might psychology be helpful for my child and me?
Therapy with a counselling psychologist provides an opportunity to discuss you or your child’s emotions, thought patterns and behaviour with a highly trained professional who sits outside that situation.
A psychologist will help by taking the time to listen and understand exactly where your child needs support. I use evidence-based psychological tools specific to what you or your child brings and we work together in suggestions for moving forward.
Therapy can help you move forward
Whatever your story, therapy with a qualified psychologist or psychotherapist is evidence-based and confidential. Find the support you or your child needs to support their mental health, plus skills and resources for life.
Things that a child might like extra help with:
Stress arising from a change in routine or challenges at school/college
Experiencing bullying
Exam stress and anxiety
Arguments with siblings
Difficulties with self esteem, lack of confidence or imposter syndrome
Managing big feelings e.g. feeling different, death anxiety
Sleep problems
Anxiety, social anxiety, OCD, GAD, BRFBs, worry or feelings of panic
Trauma, one-off event or complex
Feelings & overwhelm around having to manage a life-long health condition
Bereavement
Recognising & working with feelings
With younger children the assessment will explore how the difficulties impact upon the child/young person’s life situation, looking at daily activities at school, friendships and family relationships. Through play and discussion, we consider the child and family’s thoughts and beliefs about the current difficulties.
Parenting support might look like:
Parenting styles
Personal, family and relationship difficulties e.g. sibling conflict, friendship shifts, family estrangement
Living with grief, loss or bereavement, including children who have lost a parent or live with ambiguous loss
Challenges in managing a chronic physical illness, including living with chronic pain
Difficulties from demands of parenting or being a carer
Conflict or emotional dysregulation between children or adolescents and their parents/carers
Trauma, one-off event or complex
And many other concerns…
The practice specialises in the intersection between mental and physical health across all ages from 5 years - adults, with experience supporting people living with chronic conditions e.g. diabetes, MS, Chrohn’s Disease, fibromyalgia, IBS, tinnitus, migraines, neurological conditions and rare genetic diseases.
What happens in a session?
Sessions can be for children with the parent/carer supporting, or as parent-only consultations. Sessions last sixty minutes and can be online or in person in Winchester, Hampshire. The number of sessions required to help facilitate change can vary from as little one to two sessions to a longer period, depending on what you are hoping to see change, and how best that might be achieved. This is something that is covered in an initial session.
I am trained in an integrative framework and use formulation and evidence-based talking therapies (e.g. Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Compassionate Focused Therapy, systemic, play therapy and PhotoTherapy, relational Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) to try to help with dilemmas that children, young people and parents may be struggling with. Collaborative work in sessions focuses on client strengths and building tools to help with moving forward.
How much does a session cost?
Consultations can take place in person at my psychology clinic in Hampshire or online or in some cases, at your home. After an initial consultation, walk & talk sessions in Hampshire are also possible. Therapy consultation sessions are usually sixty minutes long and are charged at £125 per session, payable on booking.
Please note that clients are liable for any additional charges e.g. report writing, travel to and from session as relevant and in the case of insurance, any fees not covered by the insurer.

I have over twenty five years’ experience working with children, from helping parents supporting their child starting school to a young person living with a chronic health condition, entering the workplace for the first time. It is always a privilege to bear witness to each client’s unique story, and work creatively with them.
